Wolvercote 1st vs. Kidlington, Home, 15th May 2010

Wolvercote put in their best performance so far this season with an impressive 154 run win over much fancied local rivals, Kidlington.  Buoyed by victory at Chinnor, Wolvercote batted first with Jonathan ‘Camp Bastion’ Campion filling in for the absent Tim Macintyre at the top of the order.  Alongside Stuart Tofts the pair made a solid if watchful start.  Camps was well caught in the covers for 12 so bringing ‘Tree-boy’ to the crease.  Following his nasty double metacarpal fracture, the arboreal James van Santen has belied medical opinion to storm back with encouraging early season form.  Lesser batsmen may have begun with a few leaves but JVS felt no need to lay down roots for this innings, smashing leather with willow from the off.  He branched out with an array of straight drives, most notably hitting a van in the trunk with a huge six.  Finally out for 58, it was a tenacious display by this budding home grown cricketer.  Dan ‘the Beard’ Rawstrome looked up for the challenge but was unfortunately run out without troubling the scorers.  Tofts (67) was relieved to remain in place and began to free his arms, dispatching Kidlington’s answer to ‘Slinger Malinga’ for consecutive boundaries.   A fine half century resulted.  Further momentum was given to the innings by a classy Dave Gilham (42 not out) and an explosive cameo from Simon ‘Mr Cricket’ Burns (30 not out).  One of Burnsy’s three huge sixes must have popped up on Oxford Airport’s radar.

Prior to the match Asif Amin experienced a few wardrobe issues, leaving his trousers in St. Edward’s lost property.  Later in the day his cap and shoes would also go A.W.O.L.  Amin took the ensuing banter well although I am not sure Nicola Blackwood will be too impressed!

In the field Wolvercote were ruthless in their approach, aided by astute field placing from the skipper.  A pumped up Burns unleashed an aggressive spell (4-14 from 12), as well as some colourful language!  John Chrystal (1-37) began strongly from the top end and picked up an important early wicket with a sparkling catch from Tofts in the slips.  Unfortunately JC may have overdone things in the sunshine and was found prostrate on the sidelines.  Medical attention was required but some have cited his expensive preceding over as the likely diagnosis!  JVS (1-27…or was it 2?!) and Gus ‘G-force’ Stock (4-16) brokered a lively bowling partnership backed up by solid catching from Darren ‘Herschelle Gibbs’ Campbell  and John ‘Beardo’ Beard.  The latter player was unlucky to spill a further catch late on which flew out of the sun in swirling wind(!)

Wolvercote will take great heart from this all round team display and duly celebrated by drinking the Summertown Wine Cafe dry.  Well done lads – a brilliant performance!  Next up Westbury II.

Match Report Cup 1st round Vs Chinnor Away

After a morale and confidence boosting friendly win against St Edwards, Wolvercote headed into their opening cup game against Chinnor in high spirits.  Before the game had begun the weather was looking ominous and so both the Umpires and Captains agreed on reducing the game to 25 overs per side.  In winter like conditions the Chinnor opening batsman strode out to the crease and the game was started.  After a steady start to the innings John Chrystal made the breakthrough after the opener played onto his stumps.  JC was very consistent and took 2 further wickets in his 5 over spell (5/0/21/3) and was well supported by Simon Burns who was unlucky not to take a wicket in his 5 overs, with numerous inside edges avoiding the stumps.  So with Chinnor 3 down after 10 with just 40 odd on the board it was Jamie Van Santen’s turn to attack the 3 pieces of wood.  Jamie ripped through the middle order and despite one expensive over he returned fine figures of 5 overs, 1 maiden 3 for 22.  The Chinnor team then produced their best partnership of the match with their skipper hitting some lovely shots on his way to a very fluent 33.  With the final overs approaching both Tim Macintyre and Brian George were brought on and this proved to be an excellent choice as they both rattled through the final 4 wickets (taking 2 apiece) including that of the Chinnor skipper, with Van Santen taking a great high catch the very next ball after almost spectacularly taking him with a great diving effort. Chinnor  93 all out.

Set the target of 94 on what appeared to be tricky pitch Tim and Stuart Tofts were sent out.  The tone was set in the very first over with Tim hitting 2 fours, the first of which was a rocket of a straight drive.  Stuart soon joined in with some lovely shots of his own pulling and cutting some glorious 4’s.  However Chinnor finally made the break through soon after the 50 partnership had been brought up with Stuart mis-timing his stroke and being easily caught.  That brought in Jamie who although offering a chance behind supported Tim very capably.  Tim continuing his recent good form with a combination of big hits and classic shots.  He brought up his second consecutive 51 not out as he guided Wolvercote home to a 9 wicket victory with half of their overs still to come.

Overall this was a very professional approach to what had the potential to be a very tricky cup tie.  All the bowlers played their part in restricting Chinnor to 93 and were supported by the much improved fielding. The team remained positive and supportive throughout the game and hopefully they can take this momentum into two big league games next week.

Well done lads on a job well done.
